Renovation, here we come!

Okay so apparently I think of blogging once every year or so. I’ll post a few times and then life takes over again. Originally I created the blog to encourage myself to practice writing regularly – but the regularly part is a struggle. Here I am again but this time, my goal is to use this space to document a home renovation.

I have been wanting to renovate my house since I bought it in 2014. I did some reno at the time – as the master bath was not in great shape and there was a need for replaced carpets and paint. I also added a built in desk as I was working from home. But I wanted to knock down walls, redo kitchen, etc – but couldn’t manage all that at the time.

After around six-eight months of planning, changing plans, rethinking, and finalizing – I am moving forward. I have engaged Preston Price of Walden Lake Construction to complete the job.

I’ve seen Preston’s work and it looks good. He finished work on a house in my neighborhood recently and one of the most impressive things was how neat and clean the job site was left every day by the subs and other workers. And I’ve only heard good things from those that have used his services! So far, Preston has been easy to work with and gives good advice and information.

I am making the updates that I want – including new kitchen, removal of walls, adding of a wall, all new floors, laundry room update, bathroom update, outdoor counter replacement. I will be taking pics along the way and hope to post every few days or so.

First up is the original floor plan of the house:

Currently I use the original living room as an office. I have built in cabinets and a desk along the right hand external wall. This will remain. This room also is sunken – pure 80s style. There is a short wall between the living room and dining room and just in the doorway to the right to form an entrance.

The wall between the dining and family room will be removed. Two of the angled walls at the entry point to the kitchen will be removed and the short wall between living and dining will turn into a full wall.

This is basically what the new plan will look like, but not to scale. I’ve added the existing rectangles in the front room showing the built-in desk which I’ve had for a few years:

I have a lot to still pick out – floors, counters, paint, light fixtures, etc. But I am narrowing down the choices. Decisions are stressful for me, but hopefully I’ll be happy with my choices!

Demo started on April 21st so I’m already behind, but hope to catch up over the next week as a lot has happened. In the next post, I’ll share “before” pics. It’s a journey!

A Perfect Day to Go Shopping

As our world becomes more “green” or ecologically-minded, there will be more and more need for market bags not made of plastic. The largest grocery chain in my area is still using plastic bags but offering paper bags as an alternative. When I look around the store, most people even settle on plastic. I’d say that primary reason that plastic is probably preferred here – the humidity level causes any frozen or cold item to sweat and paper might not hold up. I will say that it seems that the paper quality might be better than it was back when paper was the only option. But many even question the use of paper – unless made with recycled materials, the creation of paper can impact our ecological environment.

So what choices do we have? Fabric, yarn, and string bags are excellent options! Finding these at economical prices isn’t always easy, but watching for sales and promotions can be helpful. Of course, you can always make your own! Whether you sew, crochet or knit or even macrame, a market bag can be whipped up fairly quickly.

The one pictured above, I completed a few weeks ago. It took me less than 12 hours total, and I’m a super slow crocheter – plus I underestimated yarn needs. Mostly because I misread the pattern, I did not have enough yarn which required another run to the store for more.

This pattern is the Perfect Day market Tote by Tamara Kelly as is available on her Moogly blog for free. This bag pattern is crocheted in the round, starting with a magic circle. The stitches include double crochet, wrapped double crochet and finishes with single crochet. The body of the bag has a two repeat of double and then the wrapped stitch.  As you might have seen from one of my previous posts, Tamara really creates fantastic patterns, and her video tutorials are so helpful for novice crocheters like me. The tutorials help me learn and understand how to read patterns too.

For this market bag, I used Sugar ‘n Cream cotton yarn by Yarnspirations. These skeins are small and generally, Michaels has a great selection. The primary color is teal with a band of the coral seas ombre. My bag is around 17 inches wide by 19 inches long, not including the handles. My handles are a bit shorter than the pattern because, don’t laugh, I was running out of yarn. You can also add store bought handles if you prefer, but the handles are relatively simple to make as well. I used an ergonomic style hook by Athena’s Elements which are very reasonably priced and available on Amazon.

I don’t think I’ll stop making market bags, and my friends/family might start receiving as gifts, but I do need to start taking them to the grocery so that I can use less plastic. While I do reuse the plastic often, it still ends up at some point in the garbage.

No Need for Speed – Matilda Sue

Tildy may 10

Meet Tildy, or more formally – Matilda Sue. Yes, when she is in trouble, I do call her Matilda Sue (or maybe, just Tildy Sue). Tildy is a three and a half-year-old greyhound and has been with me for nearly 2 years. Her coloring is called ‘red fawn’ and she is blessed to look like she is wearing perpetual eyeliner. Her ears are quite expressive along with her eyes.

tildy 121417I adopted Tildy from Bay Area Greyhound Adoptions – a non-profit agency out of Tampa that places greyhounds that come off the track. Tildy was formerly known as Del Sol Santona (Toni). I had to change her name as Tony is a name in our family and having a dog with the same/similar name just wouldn’t do!

Tildy is retired but she had a very short career. She only raced for around six to ten weeks. She ran in a total of 14 races. She won once, came in 2nd and third, once each. In her remaining 11 races – she more than likely finished in 7th or last position. It seems she just wasn’t that interested in chasing that ‘bunny’.

Did you know that you can look up just about any racing greyhound to see their pedigree as well as their race history? Take a look >> Greyhound Data. Even somewhat cooler is that every hound has its own webpage as well. As an example, here is “Tildy’s“. Her record needs to be updated but I just discovered this so something to work on.

tildy lounging february 2018Greyhounds are awesome pets for many reasons. While they are seemingly big and tall – they can look like a tiny dog when all curled up. They are typically easy to house train or already are trained. They are relatively quiet which is good for those that work from home or that are in apartments/condo situation. Surprisingly, they don’t need a lot of exercise – a nice 20-30 minute walk a couple of times a day is good and often they can do with less. The opportunity to run now and then is welcome but keep in mind, a greyhound is a sprinter. The running will not last long and there will be lots of rest and sleep after. If you want a good dog for long walks and hikes, the grey can be conditioned to be your companion with that type of activity as well. Some like water, others don’t. Some love dirt, others don’t. Just like other dogs, each greyhound has its own personality.

tildy 102318Tildy, for example, is a very anxious pup. She reacts fearfully with rain, thunder and similar noises. For instance, she seems unfazed by planes that take off from our local small airport (small planes), but during the Lakeland Sun ‘n Fun Air Festival, she is on edge every day – we can hear but we don’t see what is flying in the sky as we are maybe 10 miles from there. The last two years, that week has been really hard on her. Tildy loves people and always happily greets, but she doesn’t need attention. She is quite content to curl up in her spot away from the frenzy. In fact, if she is in the same room with a few people, after a while, she removes herself and goes to find a quieter location for a short period. She is well behaved but will appear to ignore every word, especially when I call her for my own need. We have tried a whole training regimen but she often shuts down after realizing she needs to repeat a task to get it right.

Tildy May 3 2019

Tildy does have some separation anxiety but for the most part, she settles down as long as she can’t see/hear me outside. Part of this is probably amplified because I work fromTildy June 14 2019 b home so I am not away from her that often. She is not destructive and seems to settle fine if I am truly gone. She is good about letting me know that someone is around if I am not in the room with her and that basically is the only time she barks. She does ‘roo’ when she is happy to see someone or just happily wants to talk to me. It is my favorite thing to hear because she can be quite vocal!

As the Florida racetracks start closing their greyhound races and hounds need to find a home, more greyhounds will become available. It is best if we can find them homes. The adoption agencies are awesome partners with the racing kennels in most cases and that provides a great connector to get the dogs adopted. If you are in the market for a dog and want one that is loving, sweet, quiet, calm, easy – consider a greyhound. All you need to do is look at Petfinder or search for greyhound adoption to find an agency near you. Additionally, you can look at the Greyhound Data website for adoption partners. You might even want to foster a hound first to see how it goes. I’ll warn you though, it seems that greyhound fosters have some of the largest ‘fail’ rates – the foster family will often formally adopt the hound as their own!

Market Bags – Purposeful and Fun

Citrus Twist Market bag 062519

While I learned to crochet with my grandmother when I was a small child, I have not picked up a hook more than once or twice in many years. I am definitely a beginner or novice but I’m enjoying what I’m learning and creating. It is fun to see something grow into something usable or a gift.

Lately, I’ve been looking for market bag patterns. Bags have so many uses and with the focus on being “green”, I think that these can come in handy at the grocery or another market. Bags are fun as they are generally quite a quick creation and have a purpose. I also like that there are patterns out there where you can start with a round/circle bottom or with a rectangle like this one.

This is a project I finished last week – a crochet tote/market bag using the Citrus Twist Market Bag pattern by Tamara Kelly of MooglyBlog.com. I used Sugar-n-Cream yarn in tangerine and coral seas ombre. The pattern is easy to follow and Tamara’s tutorials are always great! My bag (not including handles) measures around 14.5 inches wide by 15 inches long. The body of the bag is a two-row repeat but the bottom is double crochet and starts with a foundation double crochet – a first for me! The pattern also includes tips on making the handles longer or shorter as well as how to adjust the size of the overall bag. Tamara’s version was very colorful using four different colors and her tutorial helps you learn to manage those. I decided to use the yarn I already had in my stash. I opted to use a skein of the tangerine, then thrown in a skein of the ombre finishing off the top and handles with the tangerine. I then added an additional row with the ombre around the handles and inside them too! While my yarn choices don’t show off the stitch as well as Tamara’s, I am very happy with it.

.. be happier ..

Hope smiles
from the threshold
of the year to come,
whispering, ‘It will be happier.’
           ~ Alfred Lord Tennyson

through-the-window-portugal-april-2016

Do you think that every January we have this same thought… “the new year, it will be happier” or “next year, I’ll find happiness”?  It seems to be something that so many chase and chase – ever elusive.  But perhaps we have a screwed up sense of what will make us happy.  Do we think that we will happier if…

…. if we have a lover or even a new lover ?

…………. if we lose weight ?

…… if we have that new job ?

…………. if we looked different ?

…. if we had a new car ?

………. if we won the lottery ?

Should we not first find happiness within ourselves and within our means?  Do we think these things are magical and freeing?  While any of the above might bring happiness, will it be a fleeting happiness or will it be lasting?  Maybe it is really just the whole naïve “grass is always greener” way of thinking?

Whatever the reason… whatever makes you search and search for happiness – I hope you will take a moment and try to determine just what makes you happy.  You might find that there are happy things currently in your life.  If you can find some sort of happiness even just here and there… perhaps you will find the next level of happiness more readily. Think about it – if you were looking for a partner/lover, wouldn’t you choose the happy one most of the time?  If you need to lose weight, won’t you need to work at it and that work will be much easier to achieve if there is something happy about the process.  If you want a new job, find out all you can about that job and don’t just jump into what could be a fire.  If you want to look different, try a new hairstyle.  If you want the new car, figure out what it might require to get it.  And if you think that winning the lottery will make you happy, watch one of those “where are they now” shows about lottery winners to see that it isn’t always about the happy.

Don’t get me wrong, I also look for “the happy” and this year, I hope to work on myself to find more happiness within.  I don’t think that anyone can make me happy other than myself, so I am going to make changes that will hopefully point me in the better direction.

2017 will be a year of weirdness to be sure but in my own little bubble, I am going to work on some things that will help me smile more often.
